iPrism V4.2 Release Notes - September 2006

> Release Notes for iPrism V4.2 (PDF)

St. Bernard Software is pleased to announce the release of version 4.2 for the iPrism Internet Filtering Appliance. iPrism V4.2 contains many new features, as well as significant performance and usability enhancements. iPrism 4.2 adds to a rich feature set that already includes IM and P2P management capabilities, Kernel-Level Filtering, Drilldown Reporting, Real-Time Monitor, and more.

New iPrism features include additional reporting capability such as enhanced flexibility in sorting and viewing reports and the ability to allow or block automatic third party updates. We've also added blocking capability for more P2P sites, enforcement of major search engine SafeSearch rules, WCCP v2 support, enhanced support for Macintosh and JAVA 5.0 environments, as well as other new features and enhancements that make iPrism your continued best choice for comprehensive Internet access management.

iPrism v4.2 Features

Third Party Automatic Updates
iPrism 4.2 allows users to choose, via the UI, whether to allow or block automatic updates. This feature was added because of a growing trend among network administrators to allow automatic updates for software patches and anti-virus updates. Previously, if iPrism was configured to authenticate all web requests, these automatic updates would fail due to the lack of authentication support in the update software. Additionally, with this version, third party update sites will be easily updated via filter list updates.

Currently supported third party update sites:
  • Norton Antivirus
  • McAfee Antivirus
  • Sophos Anitvirus
  • Microsoft Windows Updates
  • Microsoft Office Updates
Safesearch
Many users prefer not to have adult sites included in search results (in school settings, for instance). The new SafeSearch filters sites that contain explicit sexual content and deletes them from your search results. Administrators will be able to enable or disable iPrism's enforcement of SafeSearch from the ACL level. The administrator will have the option to apply SafeSearch to all ACLs or apply it to specific ACLs. Additionally, SafeSearch sites will be easily updated via filter list updates.

Currently supported engines include:
  • Google
  • Yahoo
  • Alltheweb
  • Hotbot
  • Lycos
  • Dogpile
  • Excite.
Blocking of Additional P2P Services
Administrators will be able to block the following additional P2P services:
  • iTunes

Management

Filter Manager (sorting, import/export, search)
Administrators will have the ability to search custom filters using keywords, sort custom filters alphabetically and import or export custom filters to another iPrism.

Web, IM and P2P Access Profile Copy
Users will have the ability to copy, modify and rename a profile, which can help network administrators save time in profile management activities.

P2P Grayout
P2P options in the UI when in Single Interface Mode will be grayed out. P2P filtering is never available for proxy mode configurations.

Broad OS Support
  • User interface support for Mac OS X has been added.
  • User interface support for JAVA 5.0 has been added.

Reporting

Web Top 100 Report
User selectable parameters have been added to the "Web Top Requested" report.

New "Top" categories include:
  • Hits (currently available)
  • Bandwidth
  • Duration
  • Pages
General Reporting Enhancements
Real Time Monitor -- Summaries now viewable in the real time monitor console

Detailed Reports
  • Detailed reports now offer unlimited size and easy export to PDF
  • Detailed report headers may also be exported in the common CSV format
  • Reports can now be e-mailed to multiple e-mail addresses
Administrators can now sort by the following columns:
  • Date/Time (default)
  • User Name + IP Address
  • User Name
  • Profile
  • IP Address
  • Bandwidth
  • Duration
  • Category
  • URL

System

Diagnostics & Tunnel management
Improved diagnostic tools will assist St. Bernard Software's technical support team and VARs to troubleshoot user issues more effectively and quickly.

Enhancements and tools Include:
  • One click system configuration:
    • One click and the customer will e-mail their system configuration to technical support.
  • Tunnel Auto-restart:
    • When the administrator starts a tunnel and iPrism detects the tunnel to be down for any reason, the tunnel will restart automatically.
Network Enhancements
DNS Fallback
  • In the case that the DNS specified in the configuration fails, iPrism will fallback to the root name servers.
  • Currently if the DNS configured in the iPrism stops responding or fails, any feature/request relying upon the DNS ceases to function.
Note: Limited subset of WCCP v2 standards features may be available (depending upon networking and routing environment and hardware)
